F4 Corporate and Business Law (Video tutorial)
To develop knowledge and skills in the understanding of the general legal framework, and of specific legal areas relating to business, recognising the need to seek further specialist legal advice where necessary.
ACCA F4 - Corporate and Business Law
Aim
To develop knowledge and skills in the understanding of the general legal framework, and of specific legal areas relating to business, recognising the need to seek further specialist legal advice where necessary.

Law is the basis of financial accounting, auditing, taxation and the various business vehicles (i.e. the sole trader, the partnership, the company).  Not only is knowledge of the law central to your work, it constantly impinges on your personal life too.  Not surprisingly, ACCA wants to ensure that you have a basic understanding of the law.  A professional person must have an understanding of the legal framework within which he or she works.

On completion of this paper, students should be able to

    * Identify the essential elements of the legal system including the main sources of law.
    * Recognise and apply the appropriate legal rules relating to the law of obligations.
    * Explain and apply the law relating to employment relationships.
    * Distinguish between alternative forms and consistutions of business organisations.
    * Recognise and compare types of capital and the financing of companies.
    * Descroibe and explain how companies are managed, administered and regulated.
    * Recognise the legal implications relating to companies in difficulty or in crisis.
    * Demonstrate an understanding of governance and ethical issues relating to business.

It is a very wide syllabus and that can appear forbidding and demoralising.  However, as is pointed out above, you are not being examined as lawyers; you are not expected to have a detailed knowledge of legal matters.  Rather you are required to have a working knowledge of those aspects of law that relate to the professional work of an accountant.
